Practice: How Do You

Distract Yourself?

Make two lists. First, list some of the negative ways you typically distract yourself when you are sad, angry, or frustrated. Put it on a piece of paper rather than in a journal, and tear it up if you want to. Then offer it all to God.

Then return to your list of joys for the past ten days. List one or more things you’d like to take up as holy distractions next time you are really bothered, and add other ideas as you feel prompted.

Give yourself space for a guilt-free process. The goal here is to identify the things that do and don’t bring us joy. The holy distractions are not intended to be new tasks for your already-too-long list or to make everything about productivity.
